About IISc Bengaluru

IISc is India's leading research institution for science and engineering. Founded in 1909, it is mostly a postgraduate and doctoral university, with a small, highly selective four-year undergraduate research programme.

The Indian Institute of Science began with a vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who wanted India to have a world-class centre for scientific research. With land and support from the Maharaja of Mysore, it opened in 1909 in Bengaluru. Locals still call it "Tata Institute".

IISc is different from the IITs. Most of its students are doing a master's or a PhD, and the institute is organised around research departments in science, engineering, design and management. That focus shows in the rankings: in NIRF 2025 it was first among Indian universities and second overall.

Its undergraduate route, the four-year Bachelor of Science (Research), is small and competitive. Students spend the final year on a research project, which makes it a good fit for anyone who already knows they enjoy lab work or deep problem-solving.
