Overview
About IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay is a premier engineering and research institute in Powai, Mumbai. It is especially strong in computer science, entrepreneurship and design, and runs two of the best-known student festivals in Asia.
IIT Bombay was founded in 1958, the second of the original IITs, with help from UNESCO and the Soviet Union. Its campus sits between Powai Lake and Vihar Lake on the edge of Mumbai, which gives it a quieter feel than its address suggests.
Engineering is the core, and its computer science seats are among the most sought-after in the JEE counselling process every year. The institute also has a strong design school (the IDC School of Design) and a management school, the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management.
What sets IIT Bombay apart for many students is entrepreneurship. Its incubator, SINE, and the student-run E-Cell have supported a long list of startups, and the Mumbai location puts founders a short drive from investors and corporate offices.
